The goal of the project was to spark dialogue and support for natural Black hairstyles, which are often seen as "unkempt" and "wild" in public spaces, especially the workplace. I asked four female colleagues of black ancestry to participate in the exhibition by posing for photos and sharing their own personal stories and struggles with their hair and how it has affected their self-esteem.
Creative direction involved a boldly colorful palette and a visual motif of brushstrokes, with the subjects posed as if "painting in" their own words and experiences, taking ownership of their own stories while expressing themselves to the viewers.
Community members who attended were invited to read these stories, take stickers to spread the message, snap photos at the tablet "selfie-station" with props, as well as post handwritten messages of support on the main title artwork.
